I've just bought a new computer running widows XP. My old
computer runs widows ME. How do I save my autotext
entries from my windows ME computer and move them to my
windows XP computer?

AutoText entries are saved in Word templates (*.dot files). If you
don’t specify a different location when creating an entry, it will be
saved in the default global template, Normal.dot. You can copy the
Normal.dot template from the old computer and put it on the new
computer, and that will bring along the autotext (as well as any
macros, styles, and toolbars you have stored there -- see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/WhatTemplatesStore.htm).

An alternative, if you don't want all the other stuff, is to use the
Organizer to copy the autotexts to a new blank template on the old
computer, move that to the new computer, and use the Organizer there
to copy the entries to Normal.dot.

BTW, whether it's Windows XP or Windows ME has nothing to do with it
-- the version of *Word* may be important. However, templates from
Word 2000, 2002, and 2003 should be compatible, and even one from Word
97 shouldn't give you trouble except possibly in the macros.

Hello loney!!!!!!!!!!

I have got few steps about how to copy auto text entries
to your system.
copy all the auto text entries on your desktop and send
that to the new computer and save that file to the desktop.
now open word document go to tool>click on macros>select
organiser>select>auto text tab> auto text available in
click on openfile>now from the open window you can select
the file from the desktop.now under normal in:panel select
all the auto text entries and by shift+down arrow or cntrl
+A.now click on copy and close the file.now reopen
word.you will be finding all your auto text entries.

thank you.
chin.

Autotext entries are not 'files' that you can save to the desktop! Unless
they have been created in specific templates they will be in normal.dot a
file which can be transferred to the other PC.
