Transferred Word Docs. to Word 2003 xp

Before I had my new PC with Windows XP installed, I saved all my data files on disk.

I had all copied back to my new Word 2003 and when I open them ( not all of them ) I get a lot of symbols and page breaks. How can I get them back to normal Word Documents? can anyone help me ?

I saved my entire Word data file by choosing e: as my destination disk. I could see all the individual files being passed to the disk in the window that opens when this is sort of thing is done. When I had my new pc ready, I placed the disk in the drive and copied and pasted to a folder in "my Documents". Most of the files appear to be normal, but one in say 8 comes out all garbled. Before this happens a windows called " file convertor" opens and gives a few options, I tried them, all, but the file remained garbled. Hope I have been clear enough. Thanks Tp
 
You didn't really answer the question garfield asked. What sort of disc is
e:? Is it a hard drive or some sort of removable media? If the latter, the
probability is that the files are corrupt. Try zipping them up on the old PC
before saving them to removable media, or even insert the old hard drive in
the new PC and copyh them directly.

Thanks Graham for your reply. Yes, I wasn't clear with my answer to Garfield. On my old pc, I inserted a CD in E: I copied about 10 folders from my Word documents. I did this by <copy> and <paste>. When I had my system installed, I did the same thing in reverse. As I said only about 1 in 5 are unreadable. I still have these files on the hard drive in my, now disconnected, old PC. Do you suppose that these files got corrupted while they were being copied? Would the originals be still OK ? Thanks for your support. Tony P Malta.
 
It is hard to say whether the originals will be OK, but the prognosis is
good. I would try copying them again - preferably zipped - to a CDR (not RW)
disc using your CD mastering software eg. Nero etc.

It's never a good idea to save or copy any type of file (but especially Word
documents) directly to a CD. Unless you used CD creation software to "copy"
the files to the CD, they're quite likely to be unusable when copied back to
the HD.
