Hi there, I am attempting to transfer files from one HDD to another, bigger
HDD. I am using the Data Lifeguard Tools that came with the Western Digital
HDD I am installing, and this is working as a 'ghost' file transfer. I cannot
however, get the HDD to transfer all of the xp pro operating system. When I
reboot with the new HDD, the OP will initiate, but will not get past the
Windows Startup Screen. I have tried to reinstall the operating system from
my disk, but it says a newer version than the one I have on the disk is
already installed. My question: is this because I have installed SP2?
Thanks

Yes, it is due to SP2 being installed, you will need to make a
slipstreamed XP CD with SP2 included and probably do a repair install
using it.

You need to create an installation CD that has SP2
"slipstreamed" into the files. Take a look here for the
procedure.

You first problem that you have encounter was that after the copy was
completed, you did not disconnect the original, smaller hard drive and
reconfigured the newer, large drive as "Master". With both drives in the
system during boot and both seen by XP as the same drive, the boot loader
got confused the refused to continue.

Forget re-installing, just clone the present OS partition to the
new HD. Here's a cost-free way:

Download a free trial copy of Casper XP from: www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ and copy the OS
partition to the new HD. Then, as with all newly-created clones,
remember to disconnect the old HD before you boot the new HD
for the first time. If you don't, some of the clone's file descriptors
will actually become pointers to the corresponding files in the
"parent's" file structure, but you won't know it until you remove the
old HD. After the clone's first isolated startup, it's OK to let the
clone "see" its "parent" OS when it boots up. Casper XP is good
for cloning because it will automatically copy the MBR and it
will automatically mark the copied partition "active". Since it does
not leave Windows during the copy process, it has no need to
restart the PC upon completion, and the clone is NOT booted
with the "parent" OS visible to it. (This is unlike Ghost which
automatically restarts, which requires you to tell it to copy the
MBR and requires you to tell it to mark the new partition "active"
and which needs Microsoft's .NET Framework to be installed.)

Once you disconnect the source HD (that contains the "parent"
HD), there is no need to change the jumpers or to move the new
HD in order to test the clone. If the new HD had been jumpered
as Slave, and the old HD had been jumpered as Master on the
same cable, the default boot order will move the Slave HD to the
head of the list, and the clone will boot. If the clone runs OK in
isolation, you can shut down and reconfigure the HDs as you
wish.

Wipe the new drive again and redo the cloning. Then disconnect the
original hard drive from the system, and connect the new drive jumpering
it as master. Make sure it is the only drive attached to the computer.
Then boot the computer.
