Transfering Updates

Hello all,
I getting ready to throw a new motherboard into my PC. I'm going to start
fresh with a new installation of XP. I'm trying to cut every corner to make
this as painless as possible, and I've got a question about an idea I have:

I've noticed that all (or most) of the Windows Updates are stored in the
directory C:\Windows\System32\ with each update having it's own folder.
So, instead of having to re-download all those updates (I'm a dial-up user,
so saving time on downloading would be awesome!), can't I just transfer the
update folders, then identify the updates that have a setup program (cause
some don't) and simply install those?

Personally, I think this sounds reasonably, but I have a confidence problem
and need a second opinion.
Thanks for any help!

The only problem - it won't work.

Get SP2 and all updates since then (download them separately) and burn them
to cd.
You could also slipstream (integrate) SP2 into your CD before you install,
saving you a step or dozen.

Google searches can help you with a clean installation, how to backup your
system and personal files, how to download the windows updates, etc.

You can order the SP2 cd from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
It takes a week or so to arrive, in spite of the caveat on the web site to
allow up to six weeks. SP2 is a rollup of all the updates and patches that
preceded it, plus SP1 (actually it is much more than that, but it resolves
all of the issues addressed previously). The only additional downloads
would then be those that have been released since SP2. You may also be able
to find the cd at computer outlets like Best Buy or Office Depot. Such
places were distributing them. If you have a friend who has the cd, it is
OK to make a copy.
