Transfering Files from Old Hard Drive - Trouble with My Documents Folder

My Compaq 5000T running Windows XP Home edition blew up a few weeks ago. It
was time to get a new one.

I now have and HP a1520y running Windows XP Media edition.

Now, I took the old hard drive, got an enclosure for it and plugged it into
a USB port on the new computer. Everything comes up fine, except that it
won't let me access the My Documents folder. This is the only one that
really means anything to me.

The log on for the old computer was password protected. I created an
administrator's profile on my new computer with the same name, hoping that
would help. It didn't. I can see the files loading in My Computer when I
first turn it on, but when I try to open it, I am told, "Access Denied".
Plus, when I click on properties, it shows the folder as empty.

Fortunately, I had a good back up before the crash and I didn't lose any
critical files, but there are some on the old Hard Disk that I would like to
access. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of
the files. Take a look at these articles for more info:
