i am trying to change our computer so that myself, my son and daughter dont
have our own log-in's. want everything to be under the 1 log-in as we have
several items on the computer that is on there 3 times. i am hoping that
none of the info will be deleted. i was told by doing this it will help speed
up the computer too. all i need to know is how to do move everything from
kids files onto mine.
Certainly you can do this but it will not speed up your computer.
Whoever told you this was completely wrong.
If you still want to do this:
Make sure you can see all hidden files. In XP, there are four checkboxes
to deal with:
a. Check "Display the contents of system folders".
b. Check "Show hidden files and folders".
c. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".
d. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and click "OK" to the
dialog box.
Then log into your account (presumably an account with administrative
privileges) and go to the other accounts' My Documents and copy the data
to your My Documents. You'll find My Documents for the other accounts here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents
Do the same for their Favorites. If the others use Firefox or another
browser, make sure to export those bookmarks (favorites) from within the
other browser so you can import the data into the application from your
account.
If they use an email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird),
make sure you export their addressbooks and mail so you can import the
data into the application from your account.
Once you are sure you've got all the data, you can delete the other
accounts from Control Panel>User Accounts if so desired.
