The hard drive on my XP Pro system is beginning to fail.
I wish to avoid the task of re-installing XP Pro on a new
hard drive and then re-installing everyting else. Is
there a way transferring the contents of the failing drive
to the new hard drive, including XP Pro operating system,
and avoid re-installing everything ?

You'll need to make an "image" of your old hard drive and then
transfer the "image" to your new drive. To accomplish this,
you'll need to purchase a third-party program:

Norton Ghost 2003

or

PowerQuest Drive Image

You may also wish to visit the support website of the manufacturer of your
new hard drive and see if they have a free utility program that you can use to
accomplish this task. For example, if you have a new Western Digital drive,
you can download their free Data Lifeguard Tools which includes "drive-to-drive
copy capability" (Ref: http://support.wdc.com/download/).

I used the sofware from Western Digital and it all copied
just fine but when I tried to boot to my new hard drive
it got as far as the blue Microsoft XP screen but never
moved to the welcome screen and never did boot up. What
can we do now? I even tried a repair setup but WinXP
assigned the letter D: to my new drive and now I cannot
change it back to C: I think in Microsoft's efforts to
prevent piracy they have gone a little too far this time.
I even used image software and it still cannot get beyond
the blue Windows XP screen. What are we to do now
Microsoft?
