I'm planning to install XP Pro so I have to shift files
from 1 hard disk to another one. I have the Windows ME
startup disk but not the CD as it was OEM. I want to know
the commands to do this. Suppose I have a folder
named 'a' on my drive and want to shift this folder
including all subfolders to another drive (For eg. D:\ to
C:\). Also I do not have smartdrv on the floppy and the
XCOPY command doesnt work. Only the copy command works so
if i say
copy d:\a\*.* c:\a
Only files with extensions are copied the subfolders and
their contents arent. Pls tell me how to do this since I
have many subfolders and cannot go on copying one by one.
The help say we can do it using wildcards however I dont
know what theses are so pls help.

Thanks

To copy files with sub directories try following command

xcopy d:\*.* c:\ /s ( /s to include sub directories)

Regards
Jed

As I said people the dos command xcopy doesnt work when
we boot using Windows ME Boot Disk so please suggest
something else because when I tried same cmd with COPY it
said invalid syntax

Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that comes with Windows XP.
You can run it from the Windows XP CD or you can create a diskette
with the necessary files on it on any machine that is running Windows
XP.

Save the resulting file to your other hard drive. Then when Windows
XP is installed you can run FASTW again to import the saved
information back into Windows XP.

See the article by former MVP Gary Woodruff at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm for detailed information.

Good luck
