You software applications can't be transferred, they have to be re-installed
to the new drive. Your data files can simply be dragged to the new drive
via Windows Explorer.

You should have a CD that came with your new drive (unless it is an OEM).
All of the ones I have installed include a utility to copy the small drive
to the 40gig drive. Fairly straightforward. Just install both drives and
insert the CD or floppy that came with the drive. You now will have an
exact copy of your old drive on the new 40 gig. I am assuming this is what
you want to do. If you just want to transfer data after installing a new OS
on the new drive, then you can't copy programs, just data files and export
your data from email and internet programs. But if you just want more space
and the exact same stuff on the drive, then use the CD with the hard drive.
I just did that last night migrating my son's from a 30 to 80 gig drive and
then upgrading from Win98 to XP home. Let us know if you have any more
questions.
