XP crashed and couldn't boot from saft or any other modes. I got all my school projects on my hard drive, and have to rescue them. I would like to transfer files to a new drive. I booted PC through Windows XP home set up disk (CDROM), and ran Recovery Console, but could not set Group Policy to gain access to floppy or other removable drives. What should I do

It would be good to know what caused your installation of Windows XP to
crash, and rendered it unbootable.

Have you tried to boot from the Windows XP installation CD-ROM and
proceeded to reinstall Windows XP up to the point where the Setup Wizard
detects your pre-existing installation of Windows XP and offers to repair
it automatically? At that point you should opt to let the Setup Wizard
repair your pre-existing installation of Windows XP.

Well, I am not sure what caused the problem. My PC behaved odd recently. Norton virus-definition won't update itself. Norton did auto-update the definition; however after I rebooted the system, the definition always went back to its previous state. So I ended up downloading the definition manually. My PC crashed right after I downloaded Microsoft security patch and restarted my PC on last Wednesday

I did not dare to try your suggestion during last few days. I thought reinstallation would wipe out all my data. Thanks for letting me know how installation wizard works. I appreciate your help
