Track changes in Word 2000 can't compare docs

Word97 could do a reasonable job of comparing existing
docs using the revisions tool. Unfortunately Word 2000
merely block-deletes all the text and then block-displays
all the replacement text. This is completely useless. In
order to compare docs in Word 2000 I have to pay £2300
(plus £460 p.a.) for a licence to use DeltaView, which
only does what Word97 did perfectly adequately. Why is it
that a later version of a Microsoft Office program is
inferior to an earlier version???

I had a problem with it too. There's no option given to compare now, only to merge the two documents. The text from the two documents is written in two different colors so it can be recognized, but I have to go through and accept everything that I want and reject everything that I don't want. In the old version, one or the other version was considered the original and then changes in the new document could be accepted or rejected. The new way requires a lot more work. so, can you tell me how to get Word to compare documents instead of merging?

I always choose 'merge to a new document' and then accept format changes from the latest one *I* worked on (because I'm responsible for layout). The the new one is given an incremental version number and its just a matter of accepting/rejecting changes as befor
