totals button and missing records

i created a query that correctly retrieves the records i need. i then used
the sigma button to display the total row to group some of my fields, and
after running the new query, many records are missing (not retrieved).

in fact, just pressing the sigma button (which instantly displays the total
row) and running the query without a selection parameter retrieves only
partial list of records!

is this a bug?

This sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't. What did you expect to happen
when you clicked the totals button?
