A friend of mine ask me to take a look at her Toshiba Laptop 440 CDT.It
starts Windows 95 but never gets to a desktop.

I cannot get it to go to Safe Mode and it starts loading windows 95 only to
the welcome screen, not desktop.

What I wanted to do is install a windows 98 upgrade but this laptop has no
floppy drive and I cannot use a rescue floppy.

Any comments how you would proceed at this point?

Putting the windows 98 se upgrade CD in the CD drive does not bring up its
Install program.

Start the machine and access the bios (try typing F1
during the boot sequence).
In the bios, change the boot sequence and put the CDROM
as higher priority then the Harddisk.
Save settings and exit.
Now insert the CDROM and reboot the machine... it should
now boot from the cdrom first...
Hope it helps,
JR

You will have to create a bootable floppy CD. The Win 9x disks are not
bootable.

On a working machine, goto http://www.bootdisk.com/, download the
appropriate bootdisk. (You may have to create a boot floppy or use WinImage
to extract the image file). Now use your favorite CD burning utility and
create a bootable CD. Specifiy the image that you downloaded from the
website or boot floppy.

Thanks a lot. I shall try. Is it not unfortunate that we have no standard.

I tried Delete, I tried F2, I tried Control, I tried Alt.

Now I shall try F1. Thanks a lot for response.

Well, F1 does not get me to BIOS. On my own Toshiba laptop it is F2, but
that also does not work on this laptop.

Practice your scales like a piano player to include all the F'ffin keys, not
forgetting the Esc and Del keys. I am sure it will be one of them. Have you
got pianist fingers? That will help.

Download the Win98SE bootdisk from here
http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles1/boot98se.exe
Open this file in WinImage (http://www.winimage.com), click FILE-> OPEN, now
click FILE-> SAVE AS. Give it a name and set the filetype to .IMA. click
SAVE. Close WinImage.
Open NERO Burning Rom(http://www.ahead.de). At the NEW COMPILATION dialog,
select CD-ROM (Bootable). Click on the BOOT tab and select the image file
radio button, then BROWSE. Select your image file that you converted from
above. Uncheck the expert settings checkbox. Now click the NEW button.
Now burn this to a CD.

You now have a boot CD.

On my Toshiba laptop, if I hold ESC as I turn on the computer, I'll get a
keyboard error, press F-whatever to enter setup. Try that to enter the BIOS.
