Tools/Options/General - "Recently Used File List" - checkbox grayed - how to access

Using Word 2002, on a machine running Win XP, when I go to
Tools/Options/General, I am unable to click on "Recently Used File
List" because it is grayed.

What could be causing this, and how can I get access to that checkbox
in order to turn it on?

The usual reason for this is that the user has been playing with TweakUI. If
you suppress the display of the MRU list on the Windows Start menu, this
affects Word as well.
