One thing you might try is rebuilding the Word Data key in the Registry (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm). In my experience,
though, this didn't help because it turned out that an add-in was changing
my settings, and I was able to get rid of the troublesome add-in. If you
have any add-ins loading at startup, you might consider that possibility. If
they're add-ins you need, you may just have to put up with the
inconvenience. For example, every time I create a PDF, the Acrobat add-in
clears the check box for "Update fields" on the Print tab of Tools |
Options. Now that I have realized this, I just have to go recheck it after
creating a PDF (which luckily is not *every* time I use Word).

There are 3 obdurate option boxes that I continually lose everytime I
check them: 1) the Field Codes box under View; 2) Embed Smart Tags; and 3)
Save Smart Tags as XML under Save. Invariably, I have to return to Options
to turn these features either OFF, in the case of the first example, or back
ON to enable the Smart Tags again. Any suggestions?
