Dan

Has anyone ever gotten this message? I have a large
spreadsheet. I keep adding more info and change a format
like maybe text color and this message pops up, "Too Many
Different Cell Formats!"
It has shut down excel on me at the worst or just
stopped me changing the format at the least.
Copying part of the sheet to a new workbook just copies
over the problem.
Is there any way to stop this, or reduce the number of
formats? Starting over is not an easy option.

I have run across this problem in the past. Unfortunately,
excell has a limitation as to how much formatting the
Workbook will allow. Generally, once past the limitation,
the workbook will format new areas with a default format.

Hi Dan!

Also thanks to a Google search, I found the following posting by Dave
McRitchie:

Leo Heuser has a macro that you can find in the 7th issue (eee007)
http://www.j-walk.com/ss/excel/eee/eee007.txt
of the Excel Experts E-letter to remove unused custom number formats.
The EEE newsletter is maintained by David Hager (MVP-Excel). (link to
revised code below)

Leo posted a macro 2001-05-06 in programming as a very
major revision of the macro in the eee007 article.

XL: Error Message: Too Many Different Cell Formats

I inherited a workbook that had this problem. I had to "vanilla-ize" the
workbook piece by piece.

Do a little unformatting, save the workbook, close it, reopen it and do a little
more.

And maybe xl2002 (or xl2003) will be more forgiving (while you correct the
problem--they won't allow more formats).

And I've read posts that say they've had pretty good success using
OpenOffice (a 60 meg file from OpenOffice.org or an inexpensive CD).
