Hi, I am working on a large workbook which has around 20
worksheets and is about 7Mb in size. I oftern have to add
extra sheets and colums to the base workbook. The problem
I have is that an error window pops up saying that there
are "too many cell formats". I understand this is because
excel will only allow a certain number of cell formats in
each workbook. Is there a way to increase the capacity of
the workbook for cell formats. If not what aadvice is
there for relieveing this problem, when colour is a
requirement.

I have suffered from this problem and qeried the news group in the
past. AFAIK there is no way to increase the number allowed. Here are
some of the things I did to solve the problem

Wherever possible standardise the cells. Each combination of any
format causes another combination e.g.Cell with Arial Font 8 - no
color = 1. Font 8 with color = 2, Font 8 with same color but
underlined = 3, same cell but word wrap set = 4 etc.etc.

Use predefined styles to reduce the combinations

If you have any worksheets/blocks of cells that are not printed/viewed
then apply Edit/Clear/Formats. e.g. any datasheets or working papers.

Remove any Borders/Underlines wherever possible.

Remove any shading that isn't really necessary

Remove any condiotional formats not required

Remove any unecessary blank cells and/or redundant data

Good Luck
