I've hit a dead end on the problem with many people, please help...
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Situation:
Server 2000 fully updated
5 computers log into our domain and have successfully for quite a while with
no problems.
A new XP Pro computer successfully logs into the domain, shows on the server
correctly...BUT:
the new computer can NOT surf the web, though it does ping the web successfully,
the XP computer can NOT see the shared drives on the server.
The XP computer when only belonging to a workgroup can surf fine and see the network fine

Ideas are greatly appreciated.

Firewall off? Also from a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
may reveal something.

Firewall is off.

IP config:
Looks correct, but:
Should IP Routing be enabled?
How about WInS Proxy Enables?

Probably no to both.

Posting the output from XP and one that works might help.

Nothing jumps out at me. When you can; compare this with a working machine.
though it does ping the web successfully,
* What did you mean by this?
the XP computer can NOT see the shared drives on the server.
* Can you ping other domain members? By name? By address?

Thanks, I will.

By ping the web successfully, I mean I can ping www.google.com.

I have not tried to ping other computers on our network.

Check your IE setting then. If you can ping www.google.com by name then DNS
is working and you should be able to display the page.

And this is why it is confusing. For instance, right now i have the computer
at home, connected to broadband and can surf just fine. It is only when I
join the network at work that it suddenly won't surf but will ping
www.google.com just fine.

At work the connection may be by proxy. IE|Tools|Internet

Well...I don't think so. Besides, if I have the computer not join the
domain, just a workgroup, it surfs just fine.

I checked a computer that works and it does have both:
Ip routing enable: Yes
Wins Proxy enabled: Yes

otherwise it is the same.

So, how does one turn on Ip routing??

Netbios Proxy is enabled by default and applies to RAS or VPN connections.
Either case this may help.

IP Routing Enabled? Is ICS involved here? See if this discussion helps you.

Dave, thanks for all of your input.

After some inconsistent operation today, I re-ran spy-ware finding programs
(still nothing found) but I also ran Hijack This. I noticed an entry for
webmonkey/smcproxy.exe. I deleted the &$#%! thing, and so far the computer
is
working as expected.

What a friggin' nightmare, Thanks again.

Glad to hear it's sorted.
