Ok if I have the private file with the page toc for my
discussion forum set to 'do not publish' will this enable
me to make changes to the other pages of my forum without
interfering with the articles and threads?

ie: I have a table of contents page that holds all the
threads (the private toc page is inserted there).

Thanks

In general is best to make changes to the discussion web page directly on
the live site via FP.

Marking the TOC page to not publish may or may not maintain articles and
threads, so to do so, you risk corrupting your discussion web.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Ok but if I do that (I take it you mean; going on my site
thru the net?) if so then everytime I make changes to my
site and publish it........won't it override any changes
made on the live site?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks again

Correct, open the site via FP's File Menu | Open Web and enter
http://www.yourdomainname.com

1. If you have the ability to create subwebs, then the discussion web should
be set up as subweb, so there is not chance of overwriting it when doing
normal site updates. However once a discussion web has been created as part
of the root web, it can not be changed to a subweb, you have to start over.

2. If you can't do subwebs, then you need to make all site changes directly
on the live server via FP, then you can publish a copy back to your local
machine as a back up.

Thank you.

Ok is this correct:

I created a discussion web it creates the pages in my web
then I add it to a folder and convert that to a subweb

Also sometimes when I open my live online web via
fronpage;it promts me for my password and other times it
doesn't? why and how do I get it to alawys ask for pw.

What do you mean by publish a copy to my local machine?
I open the web make my changes and save. what else should
I be doing? I notice that when I open my FP web on my hard
drive and make more changes then publish it; any changes I
made on the live site are removed.

Not the correct way and will not work, when you create the discussion web
you must set it up to be a subweb at this point.
Also sometimes when I open my live online web via
fronpage;it promts me for my password and other times it
doesn't? why and how do I get it to alawys ask for pw.

If you have opened your web in FP, and then closed it, but not FP, then
since you are still in the same FP session when you go to open it again you
will not be prompted for login. If this is not the case, then have your host
check the permissions.

If you make changes on the live site, then you must always make changes on
the live site, as your local copy is not update unless you have published
the web back to your local machine prior to making any additional changes
and re-publishing.

General it is best to work your web off line and then publish it online.
This keeps your records (hits, usage data ect. acurate) Plus does not tie up
the site nor cause any user confusion (if a user happens to be on it while
your working online). Some things can not be done locally though unless you
have the setup for it (ie viewing ASP). If you have XP Pro I think your ok
to do this. The Home version does not allow it.
