TOC from Text in Page Header

Hello,

I'm teaching myself to create Tables of Contents using styles.

I've created a Word '97 document with multiple sections, each section having
a different page header.

I've been applying the "Heading 1" style to (only) text in the Page Headers
for each section, but when I try to generate an automatic TOC, I get an
"Error! No table of contents entries found" message.

I've had no problems generating a TOC when the "Heading 1" style is applied
to text in the BODY of the document (although it still does not pick up the
styled text in the Page Headers).

Is this because the TOC controls aren't designed to work with Page
Headers/Footers, or is there possibly something I've missed or misunderstood
in the directions given to me by the cartoon paperclip?

Sincerely,
Don Hicks

TOC won't work with text in headers, as you guessed, b/c text in headers,
which by definition repeats on every page, does not have a page number for
the TOC to generate.

You need to have the text in the body of the document, as you found--if you
don't want it to show, look up using TC fields and under Options, tell Word
to build the TOC from table entry fields.

Spot on!

You still have Clippit around! You have stronger nerves than I have! I lost
patience with him long ago!
