TOC becoming corrupt

hello,

One of our users experienced a problem with a Word 98
document where the page numbers and the TOC became corrupt
after receiving an error message ... "server could no
longer connect to the document".

Part way through the TOC, instead of showing the page
number it displays what looks like code, the same applies
to the page numbers in the footers.

What could cause this? The server drive that the document
was stored on was still accessible. How can this be fixed?

Make sure you haven't just toggled the view to show Field Codes instead of
Field Results. Hit Alt-F9 to toggle between the two, or check under Tools |
Options, View tab and uncheck "field codes".

Post back if that isn't the problem.
