TOA - creation/editing

Sorry if this is asked a lot but I can't find it - in creating a TOC, what
actually determines what is in there - how selected? I generate the Table and
get the ENTIRE text of each paragraph, not just the title or heading.
Nothing seems to fix it. Help!

To clarify, are you asking about a TOC (table of contents) or TOA (table of
authorities)?

Definitely. I work in a transactional law group (agreements, not briefs), so
we use Table of Contents about 85% of documents, but TOA 0%! This problem
would seem to be more basic and more common than a search would indicate, no?

How exactly does one determine what goes into the TOC? And how do I stop the
entire text from appearing in it? This is becoming a more common problem for
me, as I am asked to work on more Word docs in Word.
