Terry,

go to Control Panel and got into both "Display" and "Power Options." Under
Display=>Settings=>Advanced=>Monitor tabs, check out the refresh rate and
make sure the "hide modes" is selected. Look for anything else out of the
ordinary also.

In Power Options, select all options to none/never and then reboot and tell
us if you still have any problems with your monitor.

It suddenly dawned on me when you said "the practical issue is how to get
the PC to reboot by default into my 'proper' system"....what you need to do
to fix it. But it looks like you already figured that one out. Remember, I
said Windows assigns the drive names automatically. But did you also know
you can (and probably should) adjust the "time to display," also under System
Properties=>Startup & Recovery Tab? You mentioned that you have to select
the one you want very quickly which tells me that you probably have this
setting set very low.

| Well, I'm darned! Somehow XP has automagically returned the partition
| names to their correct original labels:

|
| It's also for some reason removed that 'Boot' annotation.
|
| All I did was what I'd done a couple of times before, change the
| default boot drop down box I described.
|
| Anyway, not worried how it happened, just happy to have normality
| back.
