My child has downloaded some software and along with it
came "Adult links". I removed the offending program, but
it still shows in the "list of toolbars" available (when
you right click on toolbar, to hide or display toolbars)

Thanks.

Get ToolbarCop:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k

ToolbarCop removes the Toolbars, Toolbar buttons and unwanted
menu-extensions from Internet Explorer. It does not remove the spyware from
the system entirely.

Additionally, run Ad-Aware scan (www.lavasoftusa.com). Update Ad-Aware
before scanning

I just got this problem too. I didn't look online for help first, and
instead try to find the problem by deleting stuff through Regedit, and
trying to go back to default system configurations.

Follow the links provided in this thread. It'll take some manual
manipulation, but eventually you'll get it out.

And while I'm at it, how insidious is a thing like this hijacker? I didn't
okay anything, and yet it got installed automatically.

When it first came up, I dind't have the choice to stop the Adultlinks from
being installed. Should I have just turned off my computer at that point,
instead of continuing?
