Hi,
Got an Athlon XP2200 and running XP home SP2. Recently, my computer has
started hanging at 100% - leaving it going at a snail's pace. This happened
after installing SP2 - but also installed other apps following this. Here's
what I've done so far:
- Run AdAware, Syware Doctor and Trojan Remover and AVG free complete scans
.... all infected objects removed.
- Following reading elsewhere - studied task manager with interest. Various
applications were maxing out at around 95%. Deleted one of these (a MS voice
command module). However, didn't solve. Seems to effect all applications, and
when I end process (for eg. outlook) the processor max out justs shifts to
another running app.
Now, I remember about 2 mo ago, AVG shield warned me of a trojan being found
on my PC. Trouble with AVG free is that you have to run complete scan of
system in order to remove one infected file, so stupidly skipped it, leaving
it till the next time I scanned. Funnily, when next test run, AVG did not
register it. I've scouted around the app, but can find no way to retrieve a
log of warnings, so don't know what trojan got in...
Never really suffered from virus attacks before, but could this be one? It
feels as if there's something attached to various apps triggering this max
out.
Additionally, when I log off or shut down, a dialogue appears to shut down
apps that don't appear to be running on task manager (sometimes things like
exlorer and iexplorer). hmmmm... i'm puzzled
I'd really appreciate it if someone could offer help on this, as my
computer's been running for around 2 years now + it's chocca with stuff.
Don't really fancy a reinstall!!!
Thanks
Steve
