What is the best way to save projects and corresponding
collections on a CD-R? I am transfering VHS tapes to my
hard drive with the intention of making dvd's. However,
I am running out of memory and need to move the
collections and their related projects to CD. I tried
moving one collection but the related project had lots of
red X's. This tells me the project is not pointing to
the new location for the collections. Any tips? Thanks!

You need only the project (MSWMM) files and related source files. You don't
need the collection database.

The red X's mean that the files are in a different folder then they were
when the project was made. Right click on any one of them and point MM2 to
the new location. If all the source files were in one folder, you only need
to do it for one clip and MM2 will take care of the rest.

Thank you for you help! How do I know where the source
files for a particular project are located? Also, where
is the best place to store collections (my raw video
footage) long term?

I just checked for the source file by right clicking on
the clip. I am a newbie at this and may not understand
the terminology but it looks like the souce file is
the "collection" that I imported from my DV camera. Is
this correct?

Right click a clip in a collection or on the timeline/storyboard and look at
the clip's properties.... it'll include the Location (path and file name).

Long term storage of your source files... see the Backing Up section of my
Managing > Source Files page. It's a real challenge if you want to keep them
such that they will work in a project in the future.... you might be better
off just putting the whole project movie on digital tape and using it as a
new source file someday.

But the real answer depends on the source files.... a CD can hold a 3-1/4
minute clip in DV-AVI format.... I put lots of clips on CDs, and leave some
on hard drives.

See the Setup > Software page of www.papajohn.org for an outline of the 5
basic building blocks.

The source files are different than the collections... but linked

A captured file from a DV camera would be one source file.... but in MM2, a
collection could be 200 clips that are each pointing to and using difference
frames of the same source file.

Thank you for all your tips!!
