timer on boot menu

Somehow the timer function on the boot menu for my system has dissapeared.
What could cause this?

In other words, it shows Windows xp, and Windows 2000, but it doesn't
automatically start one of them after 'x' seconds.

How to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Systems Box is checked and the value is at least 10-30 seconds.

Hi,

Start/run C:\boot.ini, look at the line "timeout=". If set to 3 or less, the
boot menu will not show. If missing, it will not timeout.
