After I posted another message(see "unable to find ghost files..." just below
this entry), I found more problems...
In addition to WindowsSecurityCtr, and other programs detecting NortonAV
(after I manually deleted it) now my Windows Search function will not work.
When I right click "Search" I get a Window that does not have the Search
heading at the top, nor does it have the entire lefthand part of the Search
Window (ie search criteria box, file box, look in box).
The initial event that cascaded to this was a failed installation of
Symantec NIS. Then a failed Uninstall. When I exhausted all the Symantec
Support options for Uninstall problems I followed a number of MS Knowledge
Base articles covering manually deleting files and folders. I changed
permissions, took ownership, and ultimately had to use Safe Mode to delete
one last stubborn folder. I can't find any traces of it, but WinSecurityCtr
and other programs can detect it (C:\ProgramFiles\
CommonFiles\SymantecShared\and subfolderSPBBC\ScriptBlocking\scrauth.dll)
Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling XP-Pro? Thanks, and sorry
for the 2 posts.

first thing that comes to mind is this really the problem? Anyway, one way
to avoid reinstalling xp, is to reinstall NIS and then uninstall NIS the
proper way. Also, with reference to the search window missing pane, the
toolbar with Standard buttons in the search window must be active (checked).
Then pressing the big magnifying glass toggles that left pane on and off,
nothing to do with Norton. Their also is the repair install of xp, which
works , but all patches and service packs must be re applied. Here you will
find one such explaination:
