Time Line Question

I'm relatively new to using PowerPoint and have a question regarding
representing timelines.
My team is currently using powerpoint to present a timeline view of project
activities. All the information in the view (the time bars) is maintained
manually, which is tedious.

I'd like to use the Chart functionality of PowerPoint to display this. I am
having issues doing this.
I want to have the time expressed along the x-axis and the activities listed
on the Y-axis. I have set the x-axis parameters to display the correct date
range and intervals. I'm having no problem representing that. Example follows:
Activity A
Activity B
Activity n
12/2004 1/2005 2/2005 .........

The next thing I want to do is populate Beginning and End Dates of each
activity and have the activity date range (the = sign) show on the chart.
Example follows
Activity A ========
Activity B ==========
Activity n ======
12/2004 1/2005 2/2005 .........

Please advise if PowerPoint can accommodate this type of view.

Thanks!
