Hi all
Is there a good software package out there that has the ability to take a
large number of tiff files and process them into jpg files all in one
operation, instead of one file at a time?
Thanks.

Irfanview is a free and popular program from www.irfanview.com which will
do that, at its menu File - Batch Conversion

I think it will do it only for 8bit/channel tiffs, won't it?

Yes, I believe that is correct. It should not be any issue in this case, as
Irfanview will open 16 bit and automatically convert to 8 bits, which should
be expected since JPG format is only 8 bit too. Photoshop Actions may be a
solution to retain 16 bit TIF, nevertheless JPG is still 8 bits.

Just about any image manipulation program will do this. eg. Photoshop or
Paintshop Pro, Irfan etc. using the batch processing commands. You can
even usually include some other processing steps en route, such as
automatic contrast stretching etc.

**** !!! BEWARE !!! ****

Keep your original tiff files because they are almost certainly
uncompressed or losslessly compressed. Jpeg is usually lossy
compression and what might look good now could well look garbage on
another medium. Without the original to go back to and select another
compression ratio from, your images will be irrecoverable.
