If I have the sound volume turned up high, then if no audio is actually
playing (and the room is quiet) I can hear a distinct tick at about 1 sec
intervals. I am curious to know what would be causing this?

Anything. Computers are unfriendly to any other electronic device. EG Wireless mouses are NOT suitable (according to MS) for use near a computer. Nor are speakers. Nor are sound cards.

You have on-board sound. Your sound card is picking up electronic signals
from the motherboard.
Get a sound card and disable the onboard sound and the problem will go away.

Yes, Soundmax. It's not noticeable enough to really be a problem - but I
wondered where it came from, or if anyone else had observed this.
Thanks

Mute unused inputs in the soundcard mixer.
