I hope it's ok to ask this here because I can't find the answer. I use OE
right now and have it set to check email every 10 minutes. Can Thunderbird
be set to automatically check email like this? Thanks

Select Tools | Account Settings, and then select Server Settings for
your email account. In the Server settings group there is an option to
Check for message every X minutes, where you can specify the time.

Yes. Tools>Account Settings>Server Settings
