"Thump" noise on startup

When I start windows XP Home, there is a loud "thump"
noise through the speakers just at the end of the startup
process. Same thing at the end of the shut down
process. What tool or process can I use to find what is
causing this. All programs as well as everything else
seems to work, and all devises show that they are working.
There are no error messages or any other indicators of a
problem. Only the "thump." Maybe I have that old rabbit
(Thumper) locked up in my machine. Thanks for the help.

Hi

Can you determine where the 'thump' is coming from? is this from a 'cold' or 'warm' boot?

Could be the sound is occuring when the speakers get powered up. Try
starting with power to the speakers off and tell us if the 'thump' goes
away.

Sounds like you have your Sub Woofer turned up on your
speaker system, that is if you have a sub woofer?

If it is then there's nothing to worry about!
Regards, Dave.

Powered up with the speakers off. Thump is still there.
I notice that it occurs as various equipment is loading,
such as the scanner, UPS, etc.

Silly idea.....have you looked in control panel>sounds and audio
devices>sounds>Windows>Windows startup - see what unusual sound you may
have told it to use inadvertantly.

Great advice. It helped me identify the sound. It is
the "critical stop" sound. Now I can start to check on
that. Thanks.

If the speakers are truly off then the thump isn't comming from them.
Someone else asked about a subwoofer system. You got one? Is it off, too?

I am relieved because I thought it was perhaps Satan
inside. He got in mine once and I had to get my laptop
exorcised. I am serious. Be careful please

Oh? What were the symptoms of your computer being possesed by the devil?
Did the monitor spin around 360 degrees and projectile-vomit at you?

Steve

I think that Media Player spontaneously playing Barry Manilow and Yanni
music while showing clips from Gigli would qualify as demonic possession.

Barry has some real die hard fans. His music must have made some real
impact on people.
