Thumb Drive won't work - causes system to stop working

I am running WIN XP Media Edition. I have a SUB Storage device that I plug
into my computer. On all other computers - it's plug & play (Needs no
driver) and starts right away. Sets up a "G" drive and I can use it. In
this new PC - it just hoses everything up. When I open My Computer to look
for the "G" drive - it freezes.

Any ideas? I have tried disabling Norton AV and Windows Firewall. None of
that seems to make a different. Dell claims it's not a hardware issue. The
thimb drive manufacture claims it's not theirs either since the unit works on
other PC's.

HELP! Going carzy here!

Your USB ports are not working properly. Go into Control
Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager scroll down to the bottom
and open the USB controller ports, rightclick them and click uninstall.
Reboot your PC and your system will reinstall the USB ports.
Hope this works for you. Happy putering :~)

More than willing to try it but I found 5 -
Intel(R) 82808FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller-2658
Intel(R) 82808FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller-2659
Intel(R) 82808FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller-265A
Intel(R) 82808FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller-265B
Intel(R) 82808FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller-265C
then 5 more that say USB Root Hub.
Which one or ones do I uninstall?
I have about 4-5 in the back & 2 up front.

So even tho the printer & other stuff worked fine off the front ones; you
still think they are bad?

Iwent ahead & tried your suggestion - removed ALL. Problem still exists.
NowI get can't access drive due to I/O device error.

You are now missing chipset drivers, and apparently some windows
updates.
On the list that you posted you are missing the USB2 controller.

Nope it's there - I wrote it wrong-
82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller-265C
So I have 4 Universal & 1 Enhanced.

I have tried my USB device in a Dell E510 running WINXP M.E. 2002 wit SP2 &
it works fine. But everytime I use it my E310 with same OS - it causes
everything to freeze and I can't even use the remove hardware safely becuase
it freezes too.

How do I know about chipset drivers? Could it be another software causing
problems?

Does this behavior happen with all your USB ports. It looks like
you have 2 in the front and 4 in the back.
You might also try going to accessories>command prompt > run
"SFC /scannow" no quotes.
You might try blowing out the USB ports with canned air.
Do one thing at a time so you know what fixed it.

Well I ran that scan & it asked me to input my Windows CD - I have one that
dell sent Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Rollup 2. Then
almost when it was done - said it need some dll file and to insert my Windows
XP Professional CD2. I don't have t hat nor do I have Professional installed
on this PC. I do have a copy I could use but wasn't sure if I should use it
since it's not the OS that is installed.
Can you help make sense of this for me? I really wish there was another way
to communicate.....I would be happy to call.

Did you disable autoplay on that drive? I had a problem with a USB
flash drive not being used. I had disabled autoplay on the drive where
it was mounted, and fixed the problem by enabling autoplay again. The
system still takes a while to figure out what do do after it is plugged
in, but it does do so after a minute or so.

No never disabled anything
