Anyone tell me if there is a way to stop those darn pop
ups all the time? Is there a free program I can download?
Wow, every time you open Internet Explorer, you get 3-4
pages of ads etc. Any help would be great. Thanks

Jerry,

I find using a hosts file, for blocking content from websites that issue the
popups, works pretty well. All hosts solutions are free.

Three Hosts file sources I use:
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
(The third is included, and updated, with Spybot (see above)).

Maintain your Hosts file with:
eDexter <http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html>
Hostess <http://accs-net.com/hostess/>

Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Moreover in Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is a feature that
automatically blocks pop-ups.
One of the more visible changes in SP2 is the addition of a flexible pop-up
blocker to Internet Explorer. The first time you navigate to a site that
uses pop-up technology, a window automatically opens over the browser.
Each time you visit a Web page with pop-ups, an Information Bar appears in
Internet Explorer. Clicking the Information Bar opens a menu with choices
on how to handle pop-ups. Alternatively, on the Tools menu, click Pop-up
Manager, and then click Pop-up Window Management to add an individual site
to your allowed list, remove a site or remove all sites.

Other settings let you select whether to:
1.Play a sound when a pop-up window is blocked.
2.Block all pop-up windows even if you click a link to one.
3.Show the Information Bar when a pop-up window is blocked.

I do believe that there are freewares available on the internet to block
pop-ups. But I am not sure how good they are.

Thanks,

Prashanth

Google Toolbar downloaded and installed affords an option
of blocking popups, and it is free. PopupStopper is an
excellent utility, but it is not free.

I have tried popup killers from numerous sites, and
recommend coffeecup popup blocker. Once installed it runs in
the system tray to catch any popups from unwanted sires. To
add a site to its white list or blacklist, click on the tray
icon and either paste the address of the site into the
appropriate list (copy/paste) or type it in (eg
www.netzero.com).

I agree. This new feature is smoother and a safer way to block pop-ups.
You don't have to have a special 3rd party bar on the top of your explorer
taking up room and it works extremily well. SP2 will be great!
