How is it decided if and for how long posts are retained?
I wanted to return to one of my postings from about a week ago to see if
there had been any more follow-ups but it's disappeared - yet there remain
others from the same date and +/- the same time.

Frank,

If your using OE Express to view your Newsreading clcik Tools -> Options and
then select the Maintenence Tab.

Up the "delete new messages" value from 5 to 7 (one week) or more if you
prefer

Hope this helps

Post retention is decided by the USEnet server you are using, not the
newsgroup you posted to.. So, to answer your question about message
retention, you would really have to ask your USEnet service that
question.... There are many USEnet servers ( services providing access
to the USEnet) out there, and each service decides how much storage
space to allow each newsgroup it carries. When a newsgroups available
space gets filled up with posts, new posts will then start pushing the
oldest posts off that particular server..

Some newsreader programs do not show you "all" the message headers
when you return to a given newsgroup, but only new message headers
that you have not read.. So, your message may well be still on your
USEnet server, but you are not seeing it as a new message, because you
have already read it.

hth,

JM

Are you sure it's gone? Since you are using Outlook Express, go to View,
select "Current View" and select "Show replies to my messages" from the
extended menu and see if the message from a week ago is listed.

If not, try the following, with this newsgroup selected, right click, select
properties and hit reset. This will remove all the messages retained in
your file store for this newsgroup. When done, click Tools and select "Get
next headers." This will re-download the number of headers to which you
have Outlook Express set, by default it's 300. You may have to do this a
few times to get to messages that are a week old but if that's how old it
is, it should still be here and you should be able to download the header
and the message again.

You are using Outlook Express to view the newsgroups. You may have a view
applied which is preventing you from seeing all of the messages in the
newsgroup like Hide read messages.. Open the group in question and select
View/Current View/Show all messages.

An way to find old posts is to search google groups:

http://groups.google.com

.... Or more specifically for posts to this group:

http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=microsoft.public.win
dowsxp.basics

I also recommend this to people who have a question as a resource to search
before posting.
