Why are there such huge gaps in the postings.
e.g. I can see no postings between 23 Feb and 06 Mar.
Is it down to my news server/ISP or is it a more general problem?

It must be at your end, I see posts in all the dates.
You could try and reset the newsgroup to see if that brings them up.

It's your server, I'd guess. Try the archive at
