"This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked"

Hi - I seem to be unable to create or edit any documents. Each time I try to
type, I get the following message at the bottom left of my screen: "This
modification is not allowed because the selection is locked". I thought it
might be that I hadn't activated Word, but I confirmed that that's been done.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
