I would like an opinion of those who have used system
mechinic pro and norton's system works pro which program
they would recommed or use themselves. Thanks

I would like to know why and why third party software
you have a good opinion of.Thanks

I avoid anything with the Norton name.. and programs that promise to monitor
and fix problems can be dangerous.. it is so easy to accept recommendations
without fully realizing the consequences.. my opinion of course.. others
will have theirs and no doubt criticize what I have stated here..

There is also the issue of cost.. neither one is cheap by any means.. if you
want a program that will fix a variety of things, try TweakNow 2005..
http://www.tweaknow.com/..

Tweakui is free from here.. fixes a few things, customizes etc..

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

For spyware removal.. Adaware SE Personal.. www.lavasoftusa.com .. and..

Spybot 1.3.. http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

There are others too.. Hijackthis, CWShredder

Whichever route that you take, remember that if you have problems, nobody
made you use any of the above.. you do so at your own risk.. remember to
keep backups of any important data.. all of the above work for me without
problems.. that is not to say that they will do the same for you..

Mike,
Thanks for giving me info and I will consider it
carefully. I wonder if you have any information on why I
no longer have access to system restore. As I said it is
not available to properties and cannot use as error
message:
THE PROCEDURE ENTRY POINT REMOTE ASSISTANCE
PREPARESYSTEMRESTORE COULD NOT BE LOCATED IN THE DYNAMIC
LINK LIBRARY WINSTA.DLL.
SO BEFORE I install my op again I would appreicate any
suggestions. I was told to remove it on the drives but
since I cannot access it the usual way how should i
proceed? Also I gather you dislike Nortons for one reason
or another but do you use there anti virus at least? If
not why and why programs to you use for antivirus and
firewall? I have internet security and just wonder before
the new version comes out. I would like the best for the
buck so anything free or cheaper than the big names since
they always make us pay for the next version and it can
stop our grocery shopping now and then just to pay for
suppose nessary stuff so I think you know your stuff so
please give me a email either at this site or my email at
outlook.
Thanks Much,
Deerlady

I had many issues with Nortons stuff years ago, but I do
not know about current software. I use System Mechanic
Pro now with no problems (I'm running XP Pro). In fact,
I've found it to be quite usefull. I do considerable
graphics work and the ability to defrag my RAM makes it
very desireable software. Sure there is free stuff out
there, but by paying for it I get good quality support if
needed. With System Mechanic I've never needed any
support though. These programs are not needed to maintain
your computer but they are cheap and very useful in my
oppinion. I also use the "Incinerator" on hard discs
whenever I sell a computer. If used properly it deletes
all records in a manner that they can not be recovered by
any means. Also the registry tool has never caused me any
trouble. The freeware registry tools caused me nothing
but trouble!!! I think most people who are opposed to
this type of software think we should all be experts on
all aspects of computers. NOT! I've mastered dozens of
cutting edge graphics apps and do not have time to learn
every little detail of the operating systems. Anything
that saves me time is invaluable. If a 100 dollar piece
of software saves me 2 hours it has paid for itself.
Until today I've never seen a bad review of System
Mechanic. Sounds preety fishy to me. Try the trial
version and then you can make up your own mind without
the prejudice of people who think all software should be
free and think that other peoples time is of no value!
Just my opinion for what it's worth. :)
