i have just bought a second-hand thinkpad 600x
500MHz, 384 ram, dvd drive..
i have xp pro

but, i am not going to use the internet, or gaming; only word/excel.

should i install windows updates; do they improve normal usage

If the machine will *never* be connected to the Internet or any other
local area networks, then you don't need to install Windows Updates or
antivirus software or firewalls. Strip it down to just the essentials
and use it for a word processor. Just bear in mind that if you change
your mind about networking the machine, apply all necessary updates and
protection.
