Think the new windows longhorn will be something completely different from XP?

Think that they will bring so many new advantages and so many new features
that will run only on super-computers?

Well here is the lowdown...

A friend of mine just installed one of the latest betas (build5048), and to
be honest, i expected much more...

The only new thing i saw was a new theme (they named it aero if my memory
serves me well) and a better Windows explorer. Everything else is just the
same with Windows XP SP2. The same Device manager, the same network
utilities, nothing new... And where is that so caled sidebar?

As regard the requirments the installation was done on a Celeron D 2.66, 512
ram (single), ATI Radeon 7000, and Quantum Fireball 12GB (ATA 66), and the
system runs almost like on Windows XP

And my friend also faced the first incompability. The HyperSnap DX wont
play, not to mention some old games for Windows 98 (hope the new compability
wizard will be better that the one of XP).

To be honest, i expected much more after 4 years of "development". if
microsoft hasnt something more to show than this, well, what should we expect
the next year, when Longhorn will be released?

The comments are yours

Longhorn is not at the beta stage yet. At best it is still in the alpha
stage. The way it looks and functions now will not be how it will look or
functions when it is finally released.

Haven't you figured out how MickeyMouse operates yet? Their "operating
systems" have historically been just fancy crap added onto existing code
with the view to selling a new upgraded OS to the next generation of
computer users. One only has to look at XP which has it's kernel based on
W2K with some ME eye-candy added to make it appear like XP is a new
operating system. More than likely Longhorn will be just such an
"evolution" and with a billion or so dollars in advertising/marketing, to
convince everyone that they need to upgrade from XP and spend more money.
To keep their partners happy they'll add something to force computer users
to upgrade their hardware and keep their friends at Intel, HP, Symantec,
Dell, etc. rolling in the money. MickeyMouse will continue to buyout other
innovators in the computer industry and plop in some rather useless "new
features" like they did with XP. Of course these new features will be sadly
lacking, forcing users to spend more on third-party solutions.

The sheeple that attach themselves to the MickeyMouse bandwagon will be
lining up at Futureslop and BestBuy the night before the big release of
Longhorn so they can be the first to have it. They will be confronted with
all sorts of problems and will anxiously await future fixes from
MickeyMouse.

Mr. Gates will have his smiling face broadcast throughout the world smirking
about how innovative the new OS is. Alias, will pipe up and say he
"couldn't have said it better himself". :-) The MVPs around here will be
fortifying their bookmarks so they can send us the latest links to
MickeyMouse's KB articles. Kurttrail will be still insisting that
MickeyMouse's EULA doesn't mean squat. Poor computer users will continue to
be mystified about why their computers are crapping out, need
re-installation and how to get rid of the latest virus that has consumed
their Longhorn systems.

Your friend and yourself are wrong in at least one main aspect: Longhorn
does not have a *beta* version yet. They are still in *alpha* stage so what
you are seeing is not even close to what is going to be presented to the
world. Have patience and don't try to compare alpha to a beta - they aren't
even close to the same thing.

No real surprise here. Every other week it seems MS is making an
announcement about something that's been removed from Longhorn (eg WinFS).
And apparently any of the remaining useful features of Longhorn will be
backported to WinXP.

Yes. The 'innovative' file system was removed etc.

This attrition of invention is by far the most troubling situation. Surely
with billions invested we can expect greatness.
