1. AVG will not update
2. Open Office will not install
3. Windows defender will not update.

Any ideas before I do a Manufacturer's "back to as you bought it"?

You have a Malware infection.

Hi,
If the problem is to do with downloading (i.e. the Open Office install
is really a smallish .exe called a bootstrapper that STARTS the installation
but then needs to connect to the internet to download the rest of it) these
items. Then please do not jump to the conclusion that it is a virus. It
may well be just your connection settings. However if AVG downloads the
update correctly and then is unable to INSTALL it, well then I have to agree
that it is probably a virus/malware attack.

Exactly what happens when AVG / WD tries to update?

AVG runs about an inch on the blue touch-paper then fizzles out with the
notice "Update failed".
Defender just says words to the effect - "Windows defender is unable to
update"
The computer is a friends and I am going back at 4pm to wipe clean, format
and re-install. Unfortunately it's a PC World computer, he did not make
discs, so have to use the book. Hope it works. Thanks for all your help.

Unless you are perfectly successful, you risk creating a brand new
ex-friend.

I'd punt.

Why are you doing a re-install without even attempting to rid the
machine of malware? Using a good combination of recognized anti malware
and anti virus programs one at a time and under the proper conditions
has an outstanding chance of curing your problems and saving your
friendship.

I question the phrase "outstanding chance". The primary purpose of antivirus
programs is to *prevent* an infection. They can repair some of the damage
but this is by no means guaranteed. If the infection is bad then Windows
will be permanently flawed and the OP's friend will question the OP's
competence. I prefer to chose the option that gives me an unconditional and
guaranteed result.
