The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

I am having Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
(Version 5.0 Build 2195: Service Pack 2)
on my PC. Before a week i had installed Microsoft .Net
Development Environment 2002 (Version 7.0.9466)

Till the date I didn't installed IIS as I won't required
the same.
But now I want to start project on ASP.NET, so i installed
IIS which was available on Windows 2000 CD (above
mensioned).

My problem is I could not be able to connect IIS, as i am
getting status of "Default Web Site" is "STOPPED". I had
tried this through Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Internet Services Manager > [-] Internet Information
Services > [-] *computername > [-] Default Web
Site "(STOPPED)" ???

When I clicked [>] Start button, I received a message
like,

"The service did not respond to the start or control
request in a timely fashion."

When I double clicked "Personal Web Manager" ( Ctrl Panel
Administrative Tools ) It shows server is running but by

typing "http://localhost/" on IE address bar "Page cannot
be displayed" message is displayed.

Please tell me what should i do to fix this problem. If
there are any Service Packs available just guide me for
the same.
 
My suggestion is to uninstall the .NET Framework then uninstall the IIS. Then reinstall IIS. Then reinstall the .NET Framework. Delete NOTHING in this process. Just do what I suggested. Reboot after each procedure. Apply the service pack again after you reinstall IIS. But remove IE 6 first before you do that. Don't forget to reboot after each step.
