the process of displaying a subset of rows in a table means?

i don't understand what this means....... The process of dispalying a subset
of rows in a table that meets the criteria you specify is called what?

the "subset" is what is throwing me off
 
Are you talking about SUBTOTOAL?

When you filter rows you see a SUBSET of the rows... SUBTOTAL adjusts to
show the 'total' of the filtered rows...
