The page cannot be displayed

No matter what address I try to get to, I get the message
"The page cannot be displayed"
It looks like it is taking the original address and adding
...net or .org or .com to the original extension (i.e.
www.geocities.com.org)
I have windows 98. I am running IE6. I have run Spybot,
Adware, Highjack,CWshredder, and Norton.
Just tried Trend Micro Security Systems - no luck.
Any thoughts????

Look up the section of the registry that controls this.

How to Add Domain Types to Auto scan List in Internet Explorer
By default, Internet Explorer searches the following domain types when the
Auto scan Common Root Domains option is enabled: .com, .org, .edu
