I have installed Office XP Pro and service pack 3, but
cannot use Outlook for email due to some unknown setup
problem. I have defined my POP3 account and the test
message sends fine. But I get the wonderfully helpful
dialog "The operation failed" whenever I try to (1) send
or receive messages, or (2) when I try to access the
Options|Mail Setup tab|Send/Receive button to define
options. So I am for all practical purposes blocked.

I have tried the latest service pack and tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Office, but the same
problem persists. I am using Windows XP Home as the
operating system.

Hi Roger,
I had a similar problem and fixed it by making a copy of my current Outlook
profile, deleting the old and using the new one as the default.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Mail. Click Show Profiles. Click
Copy... to copy the old profile to a new name. To check if the newly copied
profile works, select the "Prompt for a profile to be used" radio button.
Click OK. Start outlook and select the new profile. Test "Send/Receive" if
it works... (Mine did :) ) If it does work, go and delete the old profile
and set the radio button "Always use this profile", selecting the new
profile for the default.

Hope this helps...
Cheers
Christo
