We are using Word 2003. I noticed when my wife closes Word that is always saves the NORMAL.DOT file. Is that normal? Why would it do that each time?

No, it is not normal and is usually caused by a misbehaving add-in.

Dang, well then, how do I determine what add-in is causing this?

(I have installed Norton Internet Security 2004; do you think that could be doing it?)

Yes, indeedy. At least there's a good possibility, as the Office Plug-in in
Norton AntiVirus causes many problems in Word (we usually recommend
disabling it). If NIS has this, disable it there. To get information about
other add-ins, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm, but note
that there are some add-ins that won't show up even using the tricks in this
article.

Hi Rod,

By chance, did you install the Remove Hidden Data utility? It's known to dirty your Normal.dot when Word starts.

If you did then you either have to live with it or uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

Otherwise take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-ins and see if you have any global templates/add-ins in the list.

If so then they will be located in one of your Startup folders. The Office\Startup folder is located in the Office installation path and the location of your Word Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations. (You can also use Windows Search to locate the files)

Once found, move them out of the folder to prevent them from loading when Word starts.

I have no idea is I installed the Remove Hidden Data utility or not. I'll try to find out.

Thank you, Beth.

If you had installed it, you would remember, since you have to intentionally
download it from the Microsoft site and install it.

I'm not sure what the procedure would be in NIS, but in NAV, it's as
follows:

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

How do I disable the Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Word, then?

What is the "Remove Hidden Data Utility?" Is it to clean up Word's leavings?
I've noticed that Word has very poor behavior when it comes to cleaning up
behind itself. --AnnaSummers
