Hi, when I type a quote " within Word, I have to add a space after it to make
it show, if I don't then it makes a special character for example ë or ä .
How can I stop this happening?

You have somehow enabled an international keyboard layout. Go to Control
Panel | Regional Options | Input Locales or Control Panel | Keyboard | Input
Locales (or the equivalent in your version of Windows) and select the
correct language for the keyboard.

Thank you. I am using Windows XP, and my langauge setting is
English(Australian). My Keyboard setting is Ünited States - International"
(as you can see it is still making the special character). However I am
using a Belkin Wireless keyboard, and Windows is still using the Microsoft
Standard 101/102 Keyboard driver, even though I have loaded the Belkin driver
several times. Should I be forcing a different driver somehow? Lyn

The "United States - International" setting is the problem. You need to find
some setting that doesn't include "International." I'm using Windows 2000,
which has somewhat different settings, so I can't advise you more
specifically, but the only place I find "United States - International" is
if I check the box for "Keyboard Layout/IME" on the "Add Input Language"
dialog that I get by clicking Add in the Text Services dialog, which I get
to by clicking Change on the Input Locales tab of Keyboard Properties or
Regional Options.

Thank you very much. I changed the keyboard from the International setting to
simply the "US" setting and the problem is resolved, your assistance is most
appreciated. thank you, Lyn

I am having a similar problem, except the situation comes and goes...
sometimes the quote appears when I press the key, sometimes not. Could this
be a hardware issue, or are there possibly some hidden keystrokes I'm
mindlessly doing to enable/disable something??
thanks.

Oh, one more thing... It not only happens in word, but also in excel and even
in notepad... This is an XP system.

You're evidently toggling between keyboard settings.

Hi Suzanne,

I am working with a professor having a similar issue, and he has his
language set to English (International). When he types a quotation mark, or a
single quote, he must type it twice and then delete one of them to make the
mark display. He says he needs to use that language - so the question is, if
he needs this language, is there no other solution to his problem than to
type twice and delete one? Thanks so much! (We are using Word 2007.)

If you can find out what he "needs" from the English (International)
keyboard, we can give you better ways of fulfilling those needs.

You can setup several languages in Windows Regional settings each with their
own keyboard layout, and you can switch between them with a keyboard
shortcut or by clicking the task bar button.

Thank you very much for responding, Graham. Does this mean, if he wants to
continue using English (International), he'd have to switch to another
language whenever he wanted to type quotation marks, and then switch back to
continue his document in English (International)?

No, it means that if he uses English UK or English US, as appropriate to his
keyboard, that the key mappings will be correct. He needs only switch to an
alternative language and keyboard layout when he is typing in a language
other than English.

But what "other languages" does he need? Quite a few are fully covered
by English (US) already.
