Dan \(again and last time\)

Okay in addition to my previous two posts: I removed a
program called CMD.exe from windows/system32 becuase
norton antivirus said it was infected and could not be
cleaned. Does this have something to do with my regedit
and system status not appearing? It pops up every time i
start windows and say "its missing" so i guess it was
important...What should i do?
Thanks again,
Dan

Hi

Have a look in the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder to see if there is a copy of cmd.exe. If so copy it to the %systemroot%\system32 folder.

If the file isn't there, put your XP CD into the CD drive and type the following from Start>Run

expand X:\i386\cmd.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe - where 'X' is the letter of your CD drive. Please note the space between the d and X and between the _ and %.

Dan,

Are you sure the message doesn't say cmd32.exe? If so, you still have the
virus/worm. Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then run the edit on line
178: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Once all is well, run this edit:

EXE Fix for Windows XP - Line 12 (Restores EXE association)

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
