has anyone ever encountered this before......

a few weeks ago, my word program would not let me fast-save documents
anymore. the option does not exist on my file menu any longer. to save, i had
to close the document, and when prompted whether i wanted to save changes, i
would say yes

now, i cannot even close a document anymore, since that option has
disappeared from my file menu as well. thus, to close it or save it, i have
to exit the program.

i am waiting for the exit option to disappear from my file menu next. this
is getting ridiculous

in addition, i am no longer able to insert symbols. the symbol option has
disappeared from my insert menu.

what do you think is happening, and what can i do about it?

thanks, sincerely, in advance for all your help

Word (like other Office apps) hides menu options that you don't use. To
redisplay them, click the double-arrow at the bottom of the menu, or simply
keep the menu open for a few seconds. Somewhere there's an option to turn
this feature off completely, but I can't remember where.

The option for turning off the adaptive menus feature is Tools > Customize >
Options and check "Show full menus".

However, I rather doubt it's adaptive menus at work here, since the OT
obviously uses these items regularly. I would guess rather it might be the
"Big Minus" cursor. If you accidentally use Alt-Ctrl-Hyphen you get a cursor
that displays as a black bar and will delete the next menu item you try to
select. Often seems to happen when people try for an em dash (Alt-Ctrl-Minus
[Num-] ).

To restore the missing commands, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm.

thanks, but i was already aware of that feature

options such as "save" and "close" etc. are ones i use all the time, thus
they never really went away, such as you are describing

when i say they "disappeared" i mean they literally disappeared and are
nowhere to be found

thanks. this is possible. i use em-dash all the time. i have also encountered
the big black bar you describe. do you know how i get the menu options back?
thank you very much
